In 1993, the Department of Census and Statistics (DCS) conducted its first Survey on Construction on Industries at the request of Institute for Construction on Training and Development(ICTAD). The output of the survey revealed that this survey to be continued to produce important economic and labor related indicators of construction on sector in the country. Therefore, the Department had undertaken it regularly.

The Annual Survey of Trade and Services 2018 is the third in the series of surveys on the services sector of Sri Lanka conducted by the Department of Census and Statistics (DCS). As the Sri Lankan economy which was predominantly dominated by agricultural activities transformed towards a diverse mix of more trade and other services over the past few decades, there was a growing demand for data on these emerging sectors from a wide range of users including planners, policy makers and researchers.
The Department of Census and Statistics (DCS) conducted the first Sri Lanka national survey on time use statistics in 2017. The primary objective of Time Use Survey is to measure the participation of men and women in paid and unpaid activities.
Target 5.4 of fifth SDG goal is to recognize and value unpaid care and domestic work through the provision of public services, infrastructure and social protection policies. SDG indicator 5.4.1 which is “proportion of time spent in a day on unpaid domestic and care work by men and women” could be calculated using the results of Time Use Surveys.
Accordingly, SDG indicator 5.4.1 for women and men (% of 24-hour day) in Sri Lanka were reported 23.4 percent and 6.2 percent respectively.
Time Use Surveys (TUS) are household-based surveys that measure and analyze time spent by women and men, girls and boys on different activities over a specified period. The results of the Time Use Survey enable one to identify what activities are performed, how they are performed and how long it takes to perform such activities.
The Department of Census and Statistics (DCS) conducted the first Sri Lanka national survey on time use statistics in 2017. The primary objective of TUS is to measure the participation of men and women in paid and unpaid activities. Moreover, the TUS report contains information on the time spent on unpaid care giving activities, voluntary work, and domestic service of the household members. Also provides information on time spent on learning, socializing, leisure activities and self-care activities of 10 years and above aged Sri Lankans.
