The Department of Census and Statistics is honored to present the 61st edition of the Statistical Abstract, a publication that has consistently served as a vital source of statistical data since its first issue in 1949. The primary objective of this Abstract is to present a comprehensive collection of statistical tables covering a wide range of information including Country’s Population, Employment, Agriculture, Education, Trade, Industry, Climate, Communication, Social Condition and more.

Every endeavor has been made to ensure that the information provided in this publication is as accurate, clear, and up-to-date as possible, within the constraints of time and space. To assist researchers, policymakers, and other stakeholders, the data provided incorporates multiple years wherever practicable and has been precisely revised to incorporate the most recent statistics, with updates extending to the year 2023.

This edition has been prepared by the Publications division under the guidance of Mrs. D.D.G.A. Seneviratne, the Director General of the Department with headed by the Director Mrs. J.K.B. Nayanahari Jayakodi. The preparation and verification of data were undertaken by Ms. W. Aruni Nilupuli Sirisena, assisted by Mr. S. Pungunran, Statistical Officers and P. Vageeshwary, Clerk under the supervision of Mrs. K.K. De Almeida Statistician.

This publication owes much to the assistance and co-operation of divisions of the department, various Ministries, Government departments and other organizations which provided valuable data for this publication.
