Trade Statistics

Information on External Trade is collected, processed and disseminated
by the Statistics division of the Customs Department. The Trade and Services Division of
the Department of Census and Statistics compiles the following information annually based
on the data of Sri Lanka Customs and Central bank of Sri Lanka.

Total exports by value, country of destination and major commodities such as Tea,
Rubber, Coconut products, Garments, etc.
The value of imports from India and Japan each about 10% of the total
value of imports were the highest for the years 1997,1998 &1999. About 50% of total
value of the imports during the period 1994 to 1999 were intermediate goods.
The highest percentage of exports, more than one third of the total
value of exports, were to USA during the period 1997,1998 &1999. Exports of Garments
continued to have the highest share, about 45% of the total value of the exports, during
the period 1994 to 1998 and its share has dropped to 32% in 1999.
