Activities of Sample Surveys Division in the year -2005
1) Sri Lanka Labour Force Survey
Sri Lanka Labour Force Survey is
normally an island wide quarterly survey. However in year 2005 the normal survey
was not conducted as scheduled due to incomplete sampling frame in Tsunami
affected areas. Therefore in year 2005 Sri Lanka Labour Force Survey was
conducted as a one time survey during the month of August. The sample size of
the survey is around 6,000 households.
This special survey was designed to obtain island wide
information including Tsunami affected districts. National & Sector wise
information on Labour Force characteristics will be disseminated at the end of
whole survey project.
2) Income & Expenditure Survey -2005
Household Income & Expenditure Survey
is also conducted as one time survey with a sample of 6,000 households in 2005
instead of regular HIES in previous years. The survey period is from September
to November in 2005 and an identical sample of Labour Force Survey is used for
the survey. The information on household income and expenditure patterns will be
collected at this survey, and National and Sector wise data will be disseminated
at the end of whole survey project.
3) Revising the Labour Force Survey Questionnaire.
During last 10 years the demand for
Labour statistics has gradually increased with the socio economic development of
the country and users seek more information on Labour Force for their planning
purposes. The department has taken steps to collect additional information on i)
Household based economic activities
ii) Informal sector employment and
iii) Under
employment, using a revised questionnaire. The survey will be conducted using
the revised questionnaire commencing first quarter 2006.
4) Pilot Survey - Labour Force.
A new questionnaire incorporating modifications to the
old questionnaire (as described above under item 3 ) will be introduced for Sri
Lanka Labor Force survey commencing year 2006. A Pilot Survey to test all the
aspects of the survey ,while using the revised questionnaire, is conducted
during the period September- October 2005.
The Pilot Survey covers the whole country except Northern & Eastern Provinces
and Tsunami affected areas. The sample size of the pilot survey is around 3600
housing units.
