Census
of Industry – 2003/2004 The Department of Census and Statistics conducted the Census of population and Housing in 2001 and Census of Agriculture and Livestock in 2002 successfully. Having completed these two major operations, department is now conducting Census of Industries. Field work began in October 2004. The last Census of industry was conducted in 1983. Census is the only source to: v
Provide measure of the indicators of performance and the data on
structure of industry needed for formulation and implementation of industrial
Development projects. v
Provide benchmark information to evaluate the projects on
industrial sector. v
Provide a comprehensive register of industrial establishments in
order to undertake future sample surveys. Usually, the
Census of industry has two stages. Viz develop
a comprehensive frame of industrial establishments and conduct of
a proper Census in order to gather information on industrial
establishments. A comprehensive list of industrial establishments which were complied based on listing operation of Census of Industry during the latter part of 2003. Key indicators compiled using data collected by the listing operation - 2003 are given below. For
proper Census, whole frame which was complied in the field were
classified by two categories, namely the medium and large establishments with 10
or more person engaged and small establishments with less than 10 person
engaged. The medium and large establishments that have 10 or more person engaged
were selected with certainty (complete enumeration)
while other small establishments were selected by using stratified simple random
sample design. The target
population of Census is all establishments in Sri Lanka that are engaged
in the production of one class of homogeneous goods in the field of
a) Mining
and quarrying b) Manufacturing c) The generation and distribution of
electricity and water The Census instrument is three set of
questionnaires 1) CI/2L- deals with medium and large
establishments 2) CI/2S -deals with small establishments 3) CI/MQ- deals with mining and quarrying
