 LankaStat Interactive Database, Sri Lanka


 

LankaStat Interactive Database System (LIDS): Department of Census and Statistics

The main responsibility of the Department of Census and Statistics is to collect, compile and disseminate socio-economic and demographic data for Sri Lanka. Data are mainly disseminated through hard copy/soft copy publications, CD’s and website of the Department.

Included here in this page is an interactive database system and it is called “LankaStat Interactive Database System”. The software component of LIDS was prepared using DevInfo Software provided by the United Nations Children’s Fund. This database system is still at an experimental stage. Therefore, users’ comments and suggestions to further improve it are most welcome. This interactive database system has several databases. A brief description of the data bases is given below.

1.   MDGInfo Sri Lanka - 2008
 

There are 8 Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) with 18 targets. The implementation of the MDGs can be monitored in quantitative terms and much of the attention given to the MDGs comes from the power of quantification. For  regular monitoring of MDGs at global level, there is a framework of 48 indicators. These 48 indicators are being used to report the status of implementation of MDGs at global level. From regular statistical activities, Department of Census and Statistics compiles several indicators through its regular surveys and censuses. A special MDG survey was conducted in 2006/2007 to fill certain data gaps.  This database aims to provide easy, user-friendly access to data on the MDG indicators disaggregated by sex, sector and district that have been released by the Department. This database can be used to query the data and present information in a user-friendly way through graphs, tables and maps.
2.   Basic need indicators at (GN level)
 

The GN divisions of Sri Lanka were classified according to an indicator reflecting variations in characteristics of Unsatisfied Basic Needs and this indicator was called Unsatisfied Basic Needs Index (UBNI). This is a proxy indicator for poverty and this index was derived by combining several indicators related to poverty. The Data used for the classification and the values of the UBNI are given in the databases. Databases have been organized by district.
